How does Rybel design for longer use?

Rybel treats durability as part of performance from the first product brief.

Field hockey apparel is repeatedly exposed to stretching, friction, sweat, washing and high-intensity movement. We therefore consider durability at both material and construction level, selecting fabrics for resistance and pilling performance while designing each garment around repeated use.

For Drop 01, the R-Flow™ technical fabric used in our training tees achieves 50,000+ Martindale abrasion cycles and a 4/5 pilling resistance. The main woven fabric used in our shorts reaches 30,000+ Martindale abrasion cycles. Where relevant, these results are measured using recognised standards including ISO 12947-2 for abrasion resistance and ISO 12945-2 for pilling.

Construction decisions also matter. Fit, seams, finishing and the way different materials are combined are considered around the stresses each field hockey product will face in use.

Designing products to remain useful for longer can also reduce the need for premature replacement. For Rybel, that makes durability both a performance requirement and part of our approach to responsible innovation.

A product should keep doing the job it was designed to do, season after season.

How does Rybel choose materials?

Rybel selects materials for the job they need to do in each field hockey product, not from a standard fabric catalogue or a single material story.

For Drop 01, we work with specialist European technical fabrics and match each material to a specific product brief. Weight, stretch, airflow, stability, abrasion resistance, recovery and feel are considered together with fit and construction.

That selection is backed by measurable data. The R-Flow™ technical fabric used in our training tees weighs just 90 g/m², while achieving 50,000+ Martindale abrasion cycles and a 4/5 pilling resistance. The main woven fabric used in our shorts is 104 g/m² and reaches 30,000+ Martindale abrasion cycles.

Where relevant, durability claims are supported by recognised testing standards, including ISO 12947-2 for abrasion resistance and ISO 12945-2 for pilling.

The objective is not to find the lightest, stretchiest or most technical fabric in isolation. It is to find the right balance of performance, durability and comfort for the role of the garment.

A material earns its place through what it contributes to the product.

Where are Rybel products developed and made?

Rybel products are engineered in Belgium and made in Portugal, with key technical fabrics sourced from specialist European suppliers.

Product concept, fit, patterns and specifications are developed in Belgium around the specific demands of field hockey. Materials are selected for the performance each product requires, including weight, stretch, airflow, stability and resistance to repeated use.

Production then takes place in Portugal using the approved patterns, materials and construction specifications developed for each garment.

Keeping development, material sourcing and manufacturing within Europe is a deliberate choice. It allows Rybel to work more directly with specialist suppliers and makers, stay closer to product development and quality, and build with high-quality technical materials rather than sourcing purely around cost.

Rybel approaches responsible innovation through the product itself, with performance and durability at the centre.

We design field hockey apparel to perform through repeated use. By selecting materials for resistance, developing products for longevity and avoiding premature replacement where possible, durability becomes one practical way to reduce product waste over time.

We also make deliberate choices around materials, development and production. Rybel works with specialist European technical fabrics, develops its products in Belgium and manufactures in Portugal.

We do not believe these decisions alone make a product “sustainable”, nor do they tell its full environmental story. That is why we focus on improving what we can, measuring what we can substantiate and being precise about the claims we make.
